Ignite Boston 3

Thursday, May 29th, 2008 by Lucy

I presented an overview of the technology to Ignite Boston 3. The best part was engaging with the crowd. People laughed at the Willy Wonka example, cheered when I said we were an an open source non-profit, and congratulated me afterwards on a great presentation.

Click the >> arrows below the following image frame to page through the presentation.

Redefining chocolate?

Thursday, May 29th, 2008 by Clay

don't mess with chocolate

chocolate change

There’s yet another controversy brewing in the chocolate industry. Should manufacturers be allowed to replace traditional ingredients like cocoa butter when making chocolate? I bet that there are a lot of different angles to this story depending on which of Buy It Like You Mean It’s socially responsible interests you care about. Here’s a website to introduce the topic.

Case Foundation Publication

Non-profit lifers coming to terms with a younger generation of online social citizens are the intended audience of this Case Foundation report. But after the first couple pages it offers a deeper discussion about mobilizing tech savvy youth. Can you help us figure out what we’re doing right and what we could do better? Leave a comment or send us an email.

First contact by a corporate giant

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008 by Clay

I was riding home on the train, helping someone who called our official phone line (my cell phone) use our browse page. I thought that maybe he was from a local paper. I was hoping so. I almost didn’t ask…

He was doing research for Anheuser Busch!

Wired takes a cheap shot

Wired Cover

In my world there are a lot of worthwhile problems to address. So let’s get past divisive grandstanding. No sane activist belittles someone else’s concerns to make the point that their own concerns need addressing. That’s why Buy It Like You Mean It gives you the ability to empower your point of view with people who share at least part of your perspective.

Eoin O’Carroll rightly blogs that Wired could do better.

Musings from a bilumi review session

Friday, May 23rd, 2008 by Clay

Eating fancy chocolate in workshop settings is becoming commonplace for me.

Lindsey and Clay

I’m chatting with Sherri and Lindsey as they plow through the reviews in our database, rating as they go. Not a bad way to spend my time. Actually, organizing volunteer effort can be just about the best thing ever. People are so open and happy when they finally make time to volunteer. It’s a really nice side of humanity and I’m reminded what a privilege it is to work on this project full time.

Name change: looking for logos!

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 by Clay

Thanks to popular demand the name of this project is now “BuyItLikeYouMeanIt” (I’m still not sure if there are spaces in that when it’s typed). To help us decide on this new name we opened the process up to an online survey. Did you miss your chance to vote? Email me to be added to our announcements list. Then you won’t miss out when we… redesign our logo!

Catie's Sketch

Here is a concept sketch that Catie is working on. Nicole and Raj are both hard at work as well. But that is by no means the end of the process! On June 3rd we’ll ask for public comment on logo choices! So email me your own logo images by June 1st and you might win the prize!

Networking at Harvard’s Berkman 10

Saturday, May 17th, 2008 by Clay

Our ravens were invited to hob nob with top academics at The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School’s 10th conference.

Ravens chat over cocktails

I also attended the lectures (in civilian clothes), learned a lot, and made a bunch of good connections. Mark Tovey’s lecture about using accumulated data structures for world wide problem solving was particularly useful. Check out his book.

Text message system test: Pretty Good!

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 by Clay

Payam, Pete, Lucy, and Bear test our cell phone access.

Our dev team has been working their feathers off putting together an interactive online database for collecting socially responsible product information. Compared to that, giving text message access to the database was easy! Check back soon for more details.

Raven puppets on train and at expo

The Cambridge Science Festival invited us to host a “Sustainable Chocolate Research Workshop” last night. We used the opportunity to introduce our research guide and the new face of our website to the peeps that came to see us. Our raven friends set a fun mood while our awesome volunteers gave out samples of locally produced chocolate products and showed people how to use our site.
